Threading the twist

Ending the stitch

RUNNING

This simple stitch is worked by sliding the needle in and out of the fabric in a sewing motion. Travel right to left across the area. If using an even-weave fabric, each stitch should be the same length and spaced evenly along the line stitched. If using plain-weave fabric, make the stitch on the top side of the fabric longer than the stitch on the back, keeping the stitch length as even as possible. The length of the stitch will depend on the texture of the fabric and the thread being used. For straight-line stitch work, use a stitch length that is 1/4" (6 mm) or less. If it is an outline stitch, it should be a small stitch to conform to the line being covered and stitches should fit evenly along the line, as in the swirl shown here. You can use any type of thread for this stitch.
